The Promised Land(瀬々敬久監督「楽園」)
The Promised Land is the latest in a line of films based on the novels of Shuichi Yoshida (author of Villain and Rage) and was selected for screening at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. The film successfully combines two of Yoshida’s short works from A Collection of Crime Stories into a single narrative, exploring themes of mob mentality, coping with loss and social isolation. Promised Land tells the tale of a rural town that is struck by tragedy following the disappearance of a young girl, and the repercussions that this incident causes. The story is presented from the perspectives of several different characters whose experiences are interwoven, ultimately depicting the lasting effect that the event has on their individual lives and on the community.

Director Takahisa Zeze (64 Parts I and II) perfectly captures the darkly poetic yet grounded atmosphere of Yoshida’s writing, creating a film that is simultaneously heartbreaking and entrancing to watch. The star-studded cast, including Gō Ayano, Hana Sugisaki and Koichi Sato among others, all deliver realistic performances that help to give the film a sense of believability. Fans of previous adaptations of Yoshida’s work should find a lot to like with this one.
